Art x Sports Data: the New Artistic Duo

Is this the future of fan engagement?

Data is arts next muse and together they are creating new innovative products for sports fans. From leveraging blockchain technology to the live producing of generative artworks, organisations are pushing boundaries and creating immersive experiences that transcend traditional engagement.

ATP

ATP launched Love Tennis, a series of 300 artworks generated and created by Martin Grasser and Art BlocksEngine, entirely from match data during the Nitto Finals. Every serve, every shot, and every championship-winning moment was generated into a piece of art, offering fans a new way of connecting with the game. The data empowered the recreation of these moments as digital works of art. Fans were able to own these pieces digitally on the blockchain and also physically print them out.

The idea

Australian Open

The Australian Open is harnessing blockchain and art to enhance fan engagement by minting sets of unique “ArtBall” NFTs, each linked to a unique 19cm x 19cm plot of tennis court surface. The 2022 NFTs came with initial benefits like limited edition merchandise, but also a feature whereby if the winning shot of any match landed on your square, that data was uploaded to the “owning” NFT. Tennis Australia has extended significant new “token gating” benefits to the NFT holders through 2023 (including free access to theAustralian Open), which further boosts the value of the NFTs in anticipation of a new series of NFTs being issued in 2023 at a (much) higher price.

AO Art Balls

US Women’s Open - More Artball

Following their success, ArtBall is collaborating with the US Women’s Open. The collection of 3,010 unique ArtBalls and their corresponding plots on Hole 17 at Pebble BeachGolf Links, are designed with generative artist Amy Goodchild and will be generated into artwork from the data of the ball. The product amplifies the key elements that made the AO ArtBall successful: championship data, gamification showcasing the skill of the players and a new channel for fans to engage in the game of golf.

Oracle Red Bull Racing

Oracle Red Bull Racing and Bybit launch the Velocity Series - a dynamic collectible collection combining motorsports x data x digital art. A selection of talented digital artists will create unique works of art inspired by the telemetry and racing data from the F1 dominating RB19 car. The art will evolve over the course of the season, updating to reflect key moments of the races.Curated in collaboration with AOI, the series consists of four releases coinciding with the Dutch, Japan, United States, and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix throughout the 2023 Formula 1 season.

Miami Heat

The Miami Heat’s activation at Miami-Dade Arena in partnership with AT&T is a great example. ‘Connected Canvas’ takes in-game data sets eg., passes, player movement, shot chart and also the sound of the game and audiences -  and uses AI to transform them into immersive installations.

The artwork enables fans to see and feel the energy of Miami Heat culture and provides a new way of game storytelling. It is transforming how fans interact with basketball.
