Pablo Alpe is a digital artist based in Valencia, Spain, whose practice explores generative art and the relationship between art and technology. With a background in electronic engineering, he uses code as his main creative tool to build visual systems that evolve, transform and generate unpredictable outcomes. He is also co-founder of Vitamin Studio, where his practice expands into physical space through immersive, interactive and audiovisual installations.
How would you describe your artistic practice?
I would describe my practice as an exploration of systems.
I am interested in creating sets of rules and conditions that allow an artwork to develop by itself rather than defining every final outcome. Instead of composing a fixed image or animation, I use code and real-time technologies to design systems capable of generating many different possibilities.
My background in engineering has naturally influenced this way of thinking. I often approach a work by breaking an idea down into behaviours, relationships, parameters and rules, and then observing what emerges when they interact.
This approach also extends into physical space through my work at Vitamin Studio, where we apply these ideas to immersive, interactive and generative installations. There, digital systems become spatial experiences through light, sound, movement and interaction.
What interests you about working with data and generative technologies?
What interests me most is emergence: the possibility of creating something complex from relatively simple rules.
With generative systems, I don't need to decide exactly what the viewer will see at every moment. I can define a framework and allow the system to produce situations that I may not have anticipated myself.
There is an interesting balance between control and unpredictability. As an artist, you establish the rules, but at some point you also have to give up part of that control and let the system behave.
Data adds another layer to this. It can connect an artwork to something happening outside itself — a physical phenomenon, human behaviour, environmental information or any other changing source. It allows the work to become responsive and potentially exist in a continuous state of transformation.

What is your philosophy on art and technology?
For me, technology is a medium, not the subject.
I am interested in technology because of the possibilities it gives us to create behaviours, experiences and forms that would otherwise be impossible, but I don't think technology alone makes a work interesting.
The technology should eventually disappear behind the experience.
When someone encounters a work, I don't necessarily want them to think about the software, sensors, algorithms or hardware behind it. I want them to experience the idea, the movement, the atmosphere or the behaviour of the piece.
At the same time, technology has profoundly changed the way artists can work. We are no longer limited to creating static objects. We can create systems that react, evolve, generate, listen, remember or change over time. For me, that is one of the most interesting territories of contemporary art.
As an artist, what excites you about AI and what concerns you?
What excites me about AI is that it introduces a new type of creative tool and, more importantly, a new way of interacting with machines.
Until recently, working with computers creatively often meant learning how to speak their language: programming, software, technical workflows. AI is beginning to reverse that relationship. We can increasingly communicate intentions, references and ideas in a much more intuitive way.
That opens creative possibilities to an enormous number of people and also allows artists to explore ideas much faster.
At the same time, this speed is also one of my concerns. We are entering a moment in which producing visually impressive images is becoming extremely easy. The difficulty is moving from generating something aesthetically interesting to creating something meaningful.
I think authorship will increasingly be found not simply in the production of an image, but in the decisions behind it: the concept, the system, the selection, the context and the intention.
For me, AI is fascinating when it becomes part of a larger artistic process rather than simply a machine for producing images.
What do you want the viewer to take away from your work?
I don't usually want the viewer to leave with one specific message.
I prefer to create situations that generate curiosity and invite people to observe something for a little longer than they normally would.
Many of my works deal with processes that are invisible or difficult to perceive directly: flows of energy, physical forces, mathematical structures, transformations or systems operating at scales very different from our own.
I like the idea of translating these processes into something perceptible and giving the viewer a temporary window into them.
Ultimately, if someone stops, observes the work and begins to wonder about the system or phenomenon behind what they are seeing, then the piece has achieved something important for me.
