Jensen Chung

Interview
2D + Illustration

Jensen is a brilliantly talented 2D Games Artist and illustrator. His work beautifully brings to life the subtle emotions and complex narratives surrounding characters. We spoke to him about his style, his approachy to creating and what work he is most proud of.

Describe your apporach to creating?

My approach normally has a target in mind, am I telling a narrative? Evoking a feeling I experienced? Designing a character? I would end up going about them with plenty of research, if there are backgrounds then I would research the area I am hoping to paint. Knowledge is power they say!

What is your favourite project that you have worked on?

My full time job takes a lot of my time so when I do get to paint I like to make something big and quite emotionally heavy for myself - personal pieces I painted such as You're Free and A Quiet Place were great projects for me to explore narrative but also meant a lot to me.

Black Panther

Who are the biggest influences on your work?

I have many artists that played a big part in me cultivating my skill. Destiny Blue has some beautiful illustrators with colour and painting the human anatomy. Loish a very well known illustration and concept artist along with Esben Lash Rasmussen and Picolo are just a few.

How would you describe your style?

I'd explain my art style as stylised whimsical fantasy/current life. I really like trying to convey a narrative and capture a certain emotion in the piece.

A Quiet Place

What is the illustration you are most proud of and why?

I have a few, some that aren't in my portfolio but they mean a lot because they really showed how much I progressed as an Artist but out of the more recent ones it would probably be A Quiet Place. As well as being a person of colour I identify as LGBT and it was a subtle way for me to embrace that to everyone by posting it onto the internet. Many of my friends and family saw that I was associated to LGBT+.
